๐ What do all these e-bike terms mean? (Quick glossary)
Quick, plain-English definitions for the e-bike terms you'll see across our guides and product pages.
Glossary
Electrical
- Volt (V) โ electrical "pressure"; higher voltage = more speed/power.
- Amp โ electrical current (flow).
- Amp-hour (Ah) โ battery capacity; bigger number = more range.
- Watt (W) โ power; one amp under one volt of pressure.
- Watt-hour (Wh) โ total energy stored (volts ร Ah); the best apples-to-apples capacity number.
- BMS โ the "brains" of the battery; manages charging, balancing, and safety cutoffs.
Motor & drive
- Controller โ the brain of the motor; tells the electronics what to do.
- Mid-drive motor โ motor at the cranks that drives the chain (uses your gears).
- Hub motor โ motor built into the wheel.
- Pedal assist (PAS) โ motor helps when you pedal.
- Throttle โ motor power on demand without pedaling.
- Walk-assist โ low-speed help for walking the bike.
- Display โ handlebar screen showing speed, battery, and settings.
Sensors
- Cadence sensor โ detects pedaling motion.
- Gear sensor โ briefly cuts power during shifts (see the gear sensor installation guide).
- E-brake sensor โ cuts motor power when you brake (see the e-brake sensor installation guide).
Frame & components
- Bottom bracket shell โ frame tube the cranks/mid-drive install into.
- Chainstay / dropout / fork โ frame parts near the rear wheel, axle slots, and front wheel.
- Chainring / crank arm / derailleur โ front cog, pedal levers, and the shifting mechanism.
