Shifting well is not just about a smoother ride — it directly protects your motor and controller from heat and strain. The golden rule: ride your ebike the way you would ride a regular bike.

  • Starting from a stop or climbing a steep hill? Be in a low (larger) gear, just like on an ordinary bicycle.
  • As you build speed, shift up into higher (smaller) gears.
Lugging the bike in a high gear at low speed forces the motor and controller to work hard against a heavy load, which builds heat. Sustained heat is what damages the internal nylon reduction gear on a BBS02 and stresses the controller — the same way riding a car in the wrong gear damages the engine. Keep your cadence up and let the gears do their job. Ease off (or add a gear sensor) when you shift. Because a cadence-driven motor keeps pushing power through the chain, shifting under full power slams the chain and cassette. Two options: get in the habit of briefly easing off your pedaling as you shift, or install an optional gear shift sensor. The sensor detects cable movement and momentarily cuts motor power (about 0.8 second) so the shift completes with no load — it noticeably extends the life of your chain, cassette, and shifter.
